Larry Summers Resigns from ChatGPT Maker's Leadership

Board Resignation
The former official announced he would retreat from public positions after Congressional panel released his repeated communications with Epstein

Ex-Treasury chief Lawrence Summers is exiting the directorate at the artificial intelligence firm, just several days after a collection of emails between him and late convicted sex offender the disgraced billionaire became public.

Summers remarked in a release that he was "appreciative for the privilege to have participated, enthusiastic about the promise of the organization, and look forward following their development".

The prominent academic, who previously headed the Ivy League institution, announced on Monday that he would be stepping back from public responsibilities due to his connections with Jeffrey Epstein.

Message Exchange

The newly public emails showed that the economist corresponded with Epstein until the day before Epstein's 2019 apprehension for suspected trafficking of underage individuals.

In another announcement, the technology organization stated it accepted the economist's determination to resign.

"We acknowledge his significant contributions and the viewpoint he brought to the directors," OpenAI commented.

Congressional Action

This announcement comes after the two houses of the US legislature voted on Tuesday to approve a legislation that would compel the federal prosecutors to release its records on Jeffrey Epstein.

The legislation will then head to the administration of the White House for signature. He has stated he plans to approve the measure, after modifying his stance on the subject following objections from his base.

Email Contents

A collection of Epstein-related messages released by the legislative panel last week included multiple prominent individuals in the financier's previous network, without suggesting any criminal activity by those people.

The emails showed that Summers and Jeffrey Epstein regularly had dinners together, with he often attempting to link Summers to notable global figures.

Personal Response

After the emails were released with the wider community, Summers stated he accepted "total ownership for my misguided decision to continue communicating with Jeffrey Epstein".

He continued that he hoped "to rebuild faith and repair relationships with the people closest to me".

Previous Positions

Summers served in high-level positions under party leaders; acting as treasury secretary under the former president, and as director of the National Economic Council under Barack Obama.

He led the institution from five years and is still a faculty member there. When stating his departure from public commitments previously on Monday, he indicated he would maintain his academic responsibilities.

Other Impacts

Following his announcement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a liberal policy institute in the capital where Summers was a prominent member, confirmed that he was not connected with the institution.

He became part of the board of OpenAI, which makes ChatGPT, in 2023 - following a failed attempt to remove its CEO the company leader.
