The Battle Royale's Specialized Movement Mechanics Become Widely Accessible This Season

Respawn Entertainment have a special treat in store for the popular battle royale players, arriving just in time for festive season. Enthusiasts of this game's highly fluid traversal will be pleased to discover that a new movement mechanic will be introduced when Season 27: Amped goes live on Nov. 4.

Introducing The Mantle Boost

Dubbed "Momentum Boosting" by Respawn, this ability gives players a burst of propulsion when climbing over ledges and walls. According to key developer Eric Canavese, this technique was previously been a feature of Apex Legends for some time, usually referred to as "ledge boosting." However it's no easy feat for the average player, and typically employed by pro gamers in competitive play or tournaments. In this update, the team simplifies the process for everyone to execute these tricky movement boosts.

"This technique existed in Apex for some time, but the movement isn't easy to perform and a player would never know it [is in the game] without external guides," Canavese states. "Now including a visual cue so players can clearly identify the timing to trigger the high-octane traversal skill, making accessible the mechanic and adding new ways to play for a much wider base."

The Reasoning Behind Make It Accessible

Why make a previously obscure movement quirk accessible to everyone? Principal designer Josh Mohan says the team wants players to experience empowerment — even those who are new.

"[The playerbase] performs advanced techniques like super-gliding and tap-strafes, and we looked around at other games, observed what our players execute, and we wondered, 'How can we extend some of this power to more players?'" the designer clarifies. "Because currently, some of these techniques are kind of janky to use — it requires to change controls and hit precise timings. We proposed, 'How about we create a more official version?'"

The Amped Update Emphasis on Mobility

Movement is primarily the name of the game in Season 27, with Legends the gravity mage, Rampart, and Valkyrie all getting enhancements to help keep them mobile. The cooldown period on Horizon's Gravity Lift is shorter, and the Gravity Lift will boost players upward faster than it used to. Rampart's Amped Cover now include overhead protection and the ability to provide speed boosts to those nearby. However it's the high-flying Valkyrie receiving the most attention this season, with multiple tweaks implemented to enhance her as more potent, faster, and more lethal.

"In my opinion there's quite a consensus that Valkyrie's time is here," states character developer the designer. "Certainly that she's been top-tier previously, but with the introduction of other characters, movement[-based] passives, and Evac Towers, it felt like she's not very relevant in current the game. This presented a really great opportunity for us to revisit multiple elements [of her kit] and essentially bring her back to her glory days."

Enhancements to the Aerial Legend

To reclaim Valkyrie's relevance in the game's meta, Holstead says Respawn assessed all her skills and introduced significant changes. Her VTOL Jets have been upgraded, increasing her speed during flight, and the jets themselves regenerates much quicker, enabling her to spend more time aloft. She can no longer take damage from her ultimate ability, which has also been upgraded to tag opponents who are hit from the missiles. Her squad redeploy ability — which launches teammates into the air for redeployment or retreat — now takes reduced delay to activate. She's also getting recently added Legend Upgrades that players can select to reduce fuel consumption, widen the area of her rockets, or accelerate her ultimate takeoff time.

"Valkyrie's equipment fulfills the pilot experience," he says.

Map Changes

Even the game's only floating arena, this location, is getting a mobility-focused facelift, with major changes that expands choke points and renders securing elevated positions more manageable. The developers state Apex Legends Season 27 is all about giving players the resources they need to keep up with the competition.

"Essentially, we examined Apex's core identity as a movement shooter," says principal designer the lead.

The battle royale Season 27: Amped releases Nov. 4 at the specified times.
